Ryan has a Ph.D. in Theology from Wheaton College and is Associate Professor of Theology at Talbot School of Theology and Biola University in La Mirada, CA. He’s also the author of The Imago Dei as Human Identity: A Theological Interpretation, which is the topic of his Ph.D. dissertation.

Ryan and I talk about the concept of identity from both a theological and sociological perspective. The launching point of our discussion is the provocative article by Rogers Brubaker and Fredrick Cooper, “Beyond Identity” https://www.jstor.org/stable/3108478

Is identity essential to our humanity, socially constructed, a blend of both, and how do we know, and why does it matter? Are we ______ because we say we are ________? Or is our identity rooted in nature? What role do things like experience and emotions and personalities play in constructing (or discovering) our identity?

We also wrestle with questions related to sexuality and gender identities in light of the sociological conversation around identity.
